Small and medium enterprises (SMEs) are not "fully aware" of the importance of anti-spyware.
Get Safe Online, a joint initiative between HM Government, the Serious Organised Crime Agency and leading businesses, has said that while most SMEs are "well aware" of the importance of anti-virus protection for their computer systems other areas of online security are being overlooked.
Tony Neate, managing director of Get Safe Online, said: "Over 90 per cent of small businesses now have got firewalls and anti-virus [protection] but not so many have got anti-spyware.
"Some people don’t realise the difference between anti-virus and anti-spyware, which is an issue."
He explained that spyware is a "newer concept" and most anti-virus companies now include in their packages complete coverage of anti-virus, phishing, spam and spyware.
Get Safe Online published a report in June 2007 which revealed that 44 per cent of SMEs in the UK have been the victim of cyber crimes, such as identity fraud or data theft.
